Guidance for solicitors in order to help them better meet the needs of vulnerable clients has been published by the Law Society, the independent professional body for solicitors.
The guidance was issued in response to calls for support from law firms as well as other organisations such as Mencap, and seeks to aid solicitors working with clients who may have a range of mental or physical health problems, including learning disabilities.
With recent research carried out by the Law Society showing that 59% of firms had provided legal services to vulnerable clients in the preceding 12 months, there is clearly a widespread need for further guidance on how to get the best results for vulnerable clients.
Laid out using case scenarios, the guidance covers issues such as identifying vulnerable clients and their needs at an early stage, effective solicitor-client communication, working with third parties such as carers, and achieving the best possible legal outcomes for the situation.
