Why you shouldn’t feel bad about claiming compensation if you have suffered a personal injury

There has been a growing stigma that Britain is gaining more of what is being called a “compensation culture” due to the amount of people claiming for compensation.
However, the vast majority of compensation that is being claimed is deserved, and designed to help genuine victims. Those claiming fraudulently are very much in the minority.
If you are a victim of an accident that wasn’t your fault, you should not feel bad for collecting the
compensation you are owed.
What is an acceptable compensation claim?
The main question people often ask themselves is “what is a real and acceptable compensation claim?”. One of the simplest ways to judge that for yourself is to consider who is at fault for the accident. Was your injury due to an unfortunate mistake you made, or was it due to something someone else has done?
There are of course extreme circumstances where it is questionable whether a case was justified or not. For example, a man sued The Victoria and Albert Museum in London for £400 after scolding his thumb in hot soup when he found the food counter unattended and decided to help himself.
As we said, these are extreme stories, and among them are many genuine victims who rely on compensation to pay for rehabilitation and medical expenses.
Luckily, the judicial system has been built to help UK inhabitants, and judges rule fairly in genuine cases of personal injury. Even one of the most senior judges in the UK, Lord Dyson, is seeking to dispel the negative perception of compensation culture.
How to claim
At the end of the day, it is only you who can decide if you are going to make a claim. However, if you have been hurt as a result of the negligence of someone else, you may well be entitled to compensation.
